US Marine officer Lt. Col. Benjamin J. Palmer, aged 43, from Modesto, California, was killed on 12th May 2011 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, in what is suspected to be a shooting incident by an Afghan policeman, though this has not yet been confirmed.
Lt. Col. Palmer was assigned to Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force.
According to friends, Lt. Col. Palmer was married with four children and was living in the New Bern area.

In the same incident, Marine Sergeant Kevin Balduf also lost his life.
The two Marines were at an Afghan National Civil Order Police compound to provide training and support for the 5th ANCOP brigade.
“The shooting occurred when a uniformed Afghan National Civil Order Policeman began shooting at ISAF service members, resulting in the two ISAF service members’ deaths,” ISAF officials said in a statement. “The shooter was injured during the exchange and is currently in a medical treatment facility.”
