Dutch soldier, Luc Jenzen, killed in IED blast

22nd May 2010: Corporal (1st Class) Luc (Luke) Janzen serving with the Dutch 42nd Armoured Infantry was killed in Afghanistan today by an improvised explosive device (IED). Two others were killed in the blast including French Captain, Christophe Barek-Deligny and an Afghan interpreter. Four Dutch soldiers were wounded in the same attack.

French Captain, Christophe Barek-Deligny killed by IED


22nd May 2010: Captain Christophe Barek-Deligny, serving with the French 3rd Engineers Regiment, was killed in Afghanistan today by an improvised explosive device (IED) that blasted a vehicle he was in. Also killed in the same incident was a Corporal with the Dutch 42nd Armoured Infantry, Luc Janzen.

British aid worker, Chris Carter

British aid worker Chris Carter (51) was among three British civilians killed when their Pamir Airways domestic flight from Kunduz to Kabul crashed in mysterious circumstances on the Salang Pass, Afghanistan, in May 2010.

Mr. Carter was Director of Security for Afghanistan Vouchers for Increased Productive Agriculture (AVIPA) Plus program of the International Relief and Development organisation.

He was serving on one of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s leading stabilization programs, helping to increase rural family farm production, improve irrigation systems and road infrastructure, and strengthen the ties between the Afghan government and its people.

Italian Army Sergeant, Massimiliano Ramadu

Italian Sergeant, Massimiliano Ramadu, aged 33, was one of two soldiers killed 17th May 2010, by a bomb blast along the road between Herat and Bala Murghab in northeast Afghanistan.

He was in an armoured column of joint Italian, American and Spanish troops when an improvised explosive device (IED) was detonated beneath the fourth vehicle in the column.

He served with the 32nd Alpine Engineers. He came from Velletri, near Rome, Italy.

Two other Italian soldiers were injured in the attack.

Italian soldier, Corporal Louis Pascazio

Cpl. Louis Pascazio
Italian Corporal, Louis Pascazio, aged 25, was one of two soldiers killed 17th May 2010, by a bomb blast along the road between Herat and Bala Murghab in northeast Afghanistan.

He was in an armoured column of joint Italian, American and Spanish troops when an improvised explosive device (IED) was detonated beneath the fourth vehicle in the column.

He served with the 32nd Alpine Engineers. He came from the Italian province of Bari.

Two other Italian soldiers were injured in the attack.

Romanian Sergeant-Major Valerica Sandu

Valerica Leo Sandu
Romanian Sergeant-Major Valerica Leo Sandu, aged 31, died 12th May 2010 after being critically wounded by a roadside bomb which was detonated as his patrol vehicle passed by.

Sgt-Maj. Sandu was given emergency first-aid before being airlifted to a military hospital at Base Lagman. Unfortunately, surgeons could not save his life.

He served with Romania's 33rd Mountain Battalion. He leaves a wife and son in his hometown of Brasov.
