US Army Captain Michael Newton

US Army Captain Michael W. Newton from Newport News, Virginia, died on 11th June 2011 in Faryab province, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident.

Capt. Newton, age 30, served with the 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment, 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based in Baumholder, Germany. He joined the Army in 2004, deployed twice to Iraq (2006 and 2009) and spent time in South Korea.

He was a battery commander fluent in Spanish and French, and he was finishing a degree in international relations through the University of Oklahoma.

Capt. Newton leaves his parents, Barbara and Willie.
