Female Spanish soldier, Niyireth Pineda Marín

Spanish Infantry soldier Niyireth Pineda Marin was one of two troops killed in action on 26th June when a roadside bomb exploded beside the armoured reconnaissance patrol she was with.

The incident happened some 20km from the northern Afghanistan town of Qala-i-Naw.

Pvt. Marin was born in the city of Pereira. A single mother of a 12-year-old boy, she worked as a schoolteacher before she moved to the Canary Islands with her son.

Her body will be taken to a ceremony in the Canary Islands before it is moved to the city of Pereira, the hometown where Marin's family and friends are mourning their loss.

Three other Spanish soldiers were injured in the blast and evacuated by helicopter to Bala Murghab military hospital.

All of the troops belonged to the 9th Infantry Regiment based in Fuerteventura. Also killed by the blast was Sergeant Manuel Argudin Perrino
