21-year-old US Marine Lance-Corporal Nicholas S. O'Brien from Stanley, North Carolina was killed in Afghanistan 9th June 2011 while on combat duty. He had celebrated his 21st birthday two weeks ago.

His battalion had begun a seven-month rotation in Afghanistan at the end of March. He and his fellow Marines were on routine foot patrol near the town of Sangin, in Helmand Province, when a roadside bomb exploded and killed him, his father told news reporters.

ReplyDeleteI grieve along with the family. My son, Sgt. Kevin Brian Balduf was killed May 12th in the same area. He was buried in Arlington last Wednesday afternoon. Ironically, Josh Cawthorn, who was seriously injured in the same blast that killed L Cpl O.Brien, is a relative of ours by marriage. We are so very sorry for the loss of this fine young Marine.
