US Army Specialist Steven E. Gutowski, from Plymouth, Mass., was one of three soldiers killed in action by an insurgent bomb in Ghazni province on 28th September 2011. They served with the 5th Engineer Battalion, 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, based at Fort Leonard Wood. The three soldiers were riding in a Humvee when the vehicle struck a roadside bomb.
Spc. Gutowski deployed to Afghanistan in February. He described his job on his own Facebook page: "I'm current in Afghanistan my job is rte clearance drive down the road and looking for bombs or ied's as we call them i been blown up twice...almost done here."
He graduated from Plymouth North High School in 2005 and was considering joining the police after leaving the Army.
Also killed were 1st Lt. Ivan D. Lechowich and Pfc. David A. Drake.
