Private 1st Class David A. Drake was one of three soldiers killed in action by an insurgent bomb in Ghazni province on 28th September 2011. They served with the 5th Engineer Battalion, 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, based at Fort Leonard Wood. The three soldiers were riding in a Humvee when the vehicle struck a roadside bomb.
21-year-old Pfc. Drake joined the Army in January this year and deployed to Afghanistan in June. His mother, Tommye Clark-Rivers, told news reporters that her son had "wanted to be in the military and then be a cop since he was in grade school or junior high."
His brother, William, who is also in the Army, was home on leave after serving in Iraq when the family learned of David's death.
Also killed were 1st Lt. Ivan D. Lechowich and Spc. Steven E. Gutowski.
