US Army 10th Mountain officer First Lieutenant Andres Zermeno, from San Antonio, Texas, was killed in action during a patrol in Wardak province on 25th September 2011. Enemy forces attacked his unit with a rocket-propelled grenade.
26-year-old 1Lt. Zermeno served with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division. He joined the Army in 2008 after graduating from St. Mary's University where he got a degree in psychology. This was his first overseas deployment.
He met his wife Rachael at University and they married in December 2007. They have a 15-month-old daughter and a three-year-old son. He also leaves his parents, three brothers and a sister.
