US Army Sergeant 1st Class Kenneth Elwell

US Army Sergeant 1st Class Kenneth B. Elwell was one of two American soldiers killed by a bomb blast in Kandahar province on 17th July 2011.

Sfc. Elwell, age 33 from Holland, Pa., served with the Alaska-based 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team.

He joined the Army in 1997 and had previously deployed to Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan. He leaves his wife Kristen and two children, 6 year old Elise and 4 year old Nicholas.

The other soldier killed in the same incident was Private 1st Class Tyler Springmann.

  2. SFC Elwell was a great platoon Sergeant and expected the best of his men. He was a great leader and will be sorely missed by all who like myself, served under him. RIP brother

  3. SFC Elwell trained myself and many others at Fort Benning. He always led by example and set a very high standard for his soldiers. This country has lost another great man.

  4. SFC Elwell trained my son at Fort Benning. He made an indelible mark on all the soldiers that he taught. My heart goes out to his family.
