A statement issued by the US Department of Defense said they died "from injuries suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire."
Spc. Richardson served with the Kansas-based 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team.
The other soldier killed was 24-year-old Sergeant Channing B. Hicks.
