24-year-old US Army Sergeant Channing B. Hicks was one of two soldiers killed in action on 16th November 2012 in Paktika province.
A statement issued by the US Department of Defense said they died "from injuries suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire."
Sgt. Hicks served with the Kansas-based 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team.
The other soldier killed was 23-year-old Spc. Joseph A. Richardson.
