Two German troops killed by suicide bomber

German Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere confirmed that two German soldiers were killed in a suicide attack in the northern Afghan city of Taloqan on Saturday 28th May 2011.


Maiziere said three more German soldiers were injured, including General Markus Kneip, commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in northern Afghanistan. 


The police chief of northern Afghanistan, General Mohammed Daud Daud, and the head of the provincial police in Takhar, Shah Jahan Noori, both lost their lives in the suicide bombing. 

The two soldiers killed were: Major Thomas Tholi and Hauptfeldwebel Tobias Langenstein.

German officer Hauptmann Markus Matthes

German Army Captain Markus Matthes, age 33, was killed by a bomb blast in Kunduz on 25th May 2011.

The officer was part of an armoured patrol in the region. Two bombs were detonated beside the convoy damaging three vehicles.

Capt. Matthes served with the Special Operations Division.

Two German soldiers were injured in the same attack.

German Sergeant Georg Missulia

Sgt Georg Missulia
Hauptfeldwebel (Master Sergeant) Georg Missulia
Died on 18th February 2011.

He was one of three German soldiers killed when an insurgent launched an assault while they were performing maintenance on a vehicle. The gunman opened fire on the group with an automatic rifle.

The incident occured at the "Observation Point North" base, in the Puli Khumri district.

Master Sergeant Missulia, aged 30, served with the  112th. Panzergrenadierbattalion, 12th. Panzerbrigade (112th Armored Grenadier Battalion of 12th Armored Brigade).

German Paratrooper, Roman Schmidt

Roman Schmidt
Stabsgefreiter (Staff Corporal) Roman Schmidt was 22 years old when he was  killed during a suicide bomb blast on 20th October 2008. At the time, he and a colleague were searching for a hidden weapons cache in Kunar province, Afghanistan.

He joined the German Army on New Years Day 2005 and was assigned to the 2nd Company, 263rd Paratrooper Battalion.
He had previously in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

German Paratrooper, Patrick Behlke

Patrick Behlke
Stabsunteroffizier (Staff Sergeant) Patrick Behlke was one of two German Paratroopers killed, 20th October 2008, during a suicide bomb blast as they searched for a hidden weapons cache in Kunar province, Afghanistan.

The 25 year old belonged to the 2nd Company, 263rd Paratrooper Battalion. He joined the German Army on New Years Day 2004 and was assigned to the unit after initial training. He had been in Afghanistan since September 2008.

This was his second overseas deployment. He previously served with EUFOR in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Journalist, Karen Fischer

Karen Fischer
Karen Fischer, a German freelance journalist, was shot dead with her partner, Christian Struwe, while they slept in a tent beside a road in Baghlan province.

Ms. Fischer, aged 30, and a former student in the School of Journalism, was working as a freelance journalist for Deutsche Welle, the German state-run broadcasting company. She and Struwe were killed by gunmen weilding AK-47s, according to news reports over the weekend.

Authorities are being urged to waste no time in establishing who killed the journalists.

Luftwaffe Major Alexander Hofert

German Air Force Major Alexander Julius Hofert, age 33, died in Kabul, Afghanistan on 17th May 2003.

Major Hofert, stationed at the German military camp in Kabul, served with Jagdbombergeschwader 33 (Fighter Bomber Wing) of the Luftwaffe.

The circumstances surrounding his death are unclear but some reports suggest he was killed by a suicide bomber.
