Danish soldier killed by IED in southern Afghanistan

A Danish soldier was killed in southern Afghanistan late yesterday (2nd January 2013).

The soldier, serving with Task Force 7 - a Special Forces unit from Aalborg - died when a bomb exploded  during a joint foot patrol with the Afghan Police. The incident happened in the Upper Gereshk Valley, northeast of Gereshk in Helmand province.

He was evacuated by helicopter to a military hospital but died from his injuries. 43 Danish military personnel have died in Afghanistan since 2002.

The soldier has been named as Oversergent René Brink Jakobsen
