Five Georgian soldiers killed in IED attacks

The Ministry of Defense of Georgia extends condolences for the death of Georgian soldiers in Afghanistan. Four Georgian soldiers were killed by an exploding mine on October 1. Col. Ramaz Gogiashvili, Sergeant Davit Tsetskhladze, Corporal Giorgi Kolkhitashvili and Corporal Nugzar Kalandadze died while executing their duties assigned under the international peacekeeping mission. Georgia suffered its first casualty in early September. The latest deaths bring the number of Georgian soldiers killed in Afghanistan since joining the NATO-led operation to five. 

Company commander of the 31st battalion, Mukhran Shukvani, was killed on duty on September 5. Lt. Shukvani was born in 1982, he had served in the GAF from 2006 and also participated in the U.S. Iraqi mission. During his time at the GAF he was granted the Distinguished Service Medal – third rank, the Distinguished Service Medal for the Combat Wounded, and the medal “Devoted to Homeland”.
