Danish soldier Mikkel Jorgensen killed

Danish soldier, Mikkel Jorgensen was killed 23rd October, when his unit was engaged in a firefight during a patrol east of Patrol Base Bridzar, located four miles (six km) northeast of Gereshk in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was 21 and a Private with the Royal Danish Life Guards.

Briton, David Barnsdale, 33 Engineer Regt, killed

Corporal David Barnsdale, from 33 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), was killed in Afghanistan yesterday, Tuesday 19 October 2010.

Corporal Barnsdale deployed on his second tour of Afghanistan in September 2010 with the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Task Force.

Trained as the commander of a Royal Engineers Search Team, he was responsible for the detection of improvised explosive devices in areas deemed to be high risk.

On 19 October 2010 his search team were deployed on Operation OMID CHAR - operating in an area east of Gereshk, working towards the construction of a new checkpoint and patrol base to enhance the security of the local population.

During the task Corporal Barnsdale was caught in the blast from an IED which resulted in his death.

Swedish soldier, Kenneth Wallin

Swedish soldier Kenneth Wallin was killed in combat in Afghanistan on 16 Oct 2010. The attack took place just a few kilometres from the place where two Swedish officers was shot to death in February this year.

French soldier, Thibault Miloche

Thibault Miloche from the 126th Brive infantry regiment was killed by rocket. A second 126e soldier was also wounded in the attack. 

The 126th Brive infantry regiment NCO was killed during a reconnaissance mission Valley Uzbin Afghanistan, East of Kabul. 

The soldier was hit by an RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) 14th October at around 5: 30 pm.
Seriously injured, he was evacuated to hospital in Kabul, but lost his life to the injuries he sustained on 15th October.

Thibault Miloche was 39 years old. He leaves a wife and two children in the Tarn-et-Garonne, France.

This brings to 50 the death toll in Afghanistan of French soldiers since 2001 in military operations, according to the Ministry of defence.

Crew of TransAfrik cargo plane crash

An L100 cargo plane belonging to TransAfrik crashed on 13th October 2010 while flying from Bagram Air Base to Kabul, killing all eight crew and passengers on board.

The six crew were from the Philippines. Two passengers included one from India and one from Kenya.

Filipino pilot Henry Bulos from Lipa City in Batangas, co-pilot Rene Badilla and crew members Nilo Medina and Ibelo Valbuena died along with two other Filipino crew members identified only as a Mr. Castillo (mechanic) and Mr. Padora (avionics).

Polish soldier, Adam Borzyszkowski

28-year-old Senior Private Adam Szada Borzyszkowski died 14th October  during mortar attack on a Polish patrol, in the southern part of Ghazni province. 

He was serving with the 1st Battalion Air Cavalry, based in Leźnica Wielka.

The incident happened as Polish troops from Task Force FOB Warrior were patrolling Highway 1. Snr Pvt Borzyszkowski was airlifted to a Field Hospital in Ghazni, but he died from his injuries.
 

This was his second overseas mission, having served in Iraq in 2007.

British Aid worker, Linda Norgrove, dies during rescue attempt

A kidnapped British aid worker in Afghanistan has been killed during an attempted rescue by Nato troops. The death of Linda Norgrove was announced by William Hague, the British foreign secretary. She had been captured last month in eastern Afghanistan.

In a statement, Hague said: "It is with deep sadness that I must confirm that Linda Norgrove, the British aid worker who had been held hostage in eastern Afghanistan since 26 September, was killed at the hands of her captors  in the course of a rescue attempt last night.

"Working with our allies, we received information about where Linda was being held and we decided that, given the danger she was facing, her best chance of safe release was to act on that information.

Italian soldier, Corporal Francesco Vannozzi

Corporal Francesco Vannozzi, aged 26, serving with the Italian 7th Alpine Regiment was one of four Italian soldiers killed 9th October 2010 in a battle with Taliban insurgents.

Their patrol was returning to base in Farah province when the vehicles were struck by an improvised explosive device (IED). Following the blast, Taliban then attacked the patrol with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.

Cpl. Vannozzi was born in Pisa, Italy.

The four dead soldiers all served with the 7th Alpini Regiment.

Corporal Gianmarco Manca, aged 32, serving with the Italian 7th Alpine Regiment was one of four Italian soldiers killed 9th October 2010 in a battle with Taliban insurgents.

Cpl. Manca was born in Alghero, Italy.

British soldier, Peter Rayner, killed by IED

Sergeant Peter Anthony Rayner, from 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, was killed in Afghanistan on Friday 8 October 2010.

Sergeant Rayner was killed in action when he was struck by an improvised explosive device whilst leading his men on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province.

Oberfeldwebel Florian Pauli

26yo German Army Sergeant Florian Pauli was killed in action on 7th October 2010 when an Afghan insurgent dressed as a civilian approached his unit and detonated a suicide bomb.

The incident happened in Baghlan province, Afghanistan.

Sgt. Pauli, serving with 313 Parachute Regiment, was a trained paramedic in civilian life. He joined the Army in 2005.

British Gurkha, Suraj Gurung killed in action

Rifleman Suraj Gurung from 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday 2 October 2010.

Rifleman Suraj, serving as part of Combined Force Nahr-e Saraj (South), was killed during a follow-up foot patrol after an attack on his patrol base. He was caught in an explosion when a suicide bomber detonated himself and he was killed in action.

He died at the front of his platoon, leading the way as he had done for the previous six months.

Five Georgian soldiers killed in IED attacks

The Ministry of Defense of Georgia extends condolences for the death of Georgian soldiers in Afghanistan. Four Georgian soldiers were killed by an exploding mine on October 1. Col. Ramaz Gogiashvili, Sergeant Davit Tsetskhladze, Corporal Giorgi Kolkhitashvili and Corporal Nugzar Kalandadze died while executing their duties assigned under the international peacekeeping mission. Georgia suffered its first casualty in early September. The latest deaths bring the number of Georgian soldiers killed in Afghanistan since joining the NATO-led operation to five. 

Company commander of the 31st battalion, Mukhran Shukvani, was killed on duty on September 5. Lt. Shukvani was born in 1982, he had served in the GAF from 2006 and also participated in the U.S. Iraqi mission. During his time at the GAF he was granted the Distinguished Service Medal – third rank, the Distinguished Service Medal for the Combat Wounded, and the medal “Devoted to Homeland”.
