Two Dutch Marines killed

Two Dutch Marines were killed by insurgents in Uruzgan province in southern Afghanistan, on 17th April 2010, the Netherlands Defence Ministry has announced. Another Marine was severely wounded in the deadly attack.

The two Marines who died are Corporal Jeroen Houweling (29yo) and Marine Marc Harders (23yo). Both were with the Dutch 1st Marine Corps.

The latest deaths bring Dutch military casualties in the Afghan conflict to 23 dead. The Netherlands has a force in Afghanistan of about 2,000 troops, who are due to be withdrawn by the end of 2010.

German Army Master Sergeant, Josef Kronawitter, aged 24, was one of four German soldiers serving with ISAF, killed on 15th April 2010 in a fierce gun battle with Taliban insurgents.

The battle, near Eisakhel village, Chardarah province in Kunduz, lasted over two hours and involved small arms fire, machine-gun and rocket propelled grenade fire.

At the end of it, four German soldiers were dead, four seriously injured and at least twenty Taliban were dead.

The other three Germans were Major Thomas Broer, Major Jorn Radloff and Sergeant Marius Dubnicki.

French Foreign Legionnaire killed in action

A legionnaire from the 2nd REP was killed on 8th of April 2010 in Afghanistan. His unit was engaged in support of the Afghan National Army, as part of building a post (COP) in the region Tagab in Kapissa when they were attacked by insurgents. The wounded legionnaire was evacuated to Kabul military hospital, but it did not survive his injuries.

Legionnaire, Robert Hutnik

The death brings to 41 the number of French soldiers killed in Afghanistan, including 21 in clashes.
The 1st Class Legionnaire is Robert Hutnik, 23, single, originally from Slovakia. He enlisted in the Foreign Legion in May 2007 and after the basic training he joined the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment. Afghanistan, where he served as a driver of VAB, was his second mission, after a stay in Gabon. He was assigned to 3rd Company, specializing in amphibious combat.

Stabsgefreiter Robert Hartert

25yo German Army Senior Corporal Robert Hartert was killed in action on 2nd April 2010 when insurgent forces attacked his unit with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades.

The incident happened in Chahar Darreh district of Kunduz, Afghanistan.

Cpl. Hartert, serving with 373 Parachute Regiment, had been in the German military since 2006.

He leaves behind his girlfriend and family.

28yo German Army Corporal Martin Augustyniak was killed in action on 2nd April 2010 when insurgent forces attacked his unit with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades.

The incident happened in Chahar Darreh district of Kunduz, Afghanistan.

Cpl. Augustyniak, serving with 373 Parachute Regiment, had been in the German military since 2008.

He leaves a wife and three year old son Remo.

Hauptfeldwebel Nils Bruns

35yo German Army Master Sergeant Nils Bruns was killed in action on 2nd April 2010 when insurgent forces attacked his unit with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades.

The incident happened in Chahar Darreh district of Kunduz, Afghanistan.

MSgt. Bruns, serving with 373 Parachute Regiment, had been in the German military since 1998 and became a paratrooper in 2006.

He leaves a wife and two year old daughter.

Italian AISE agent Pietro Antonio Colazzo

Italian Secret Service agent Pietro Antonio Colazzo, age 48, was one of eighteen foreigners killed on 26th February 2010 during a terrorist attack on two hotels in Kabul.

He was shot and killed as he was alerting police to the attack on the phone. According to Abdul Rahman Rahman, the commander of Kabul's police, Colazzo "was in a room right behind the attackers and he could see what was happening."

Colazzo, who lived in Rome, was praised by Silvio Berlusconi, Italy's prime minister, as "a faithful government servant who died doing his job."

The combined suicide-bomb and shooting attack claimed the lives of ten other foreigners including nine Indian medical staff and French filmmaker Severin Blanchet plus three Afghan police officers.

Romanian Army Sergeant-major, Florin Badiceanu

Romanian Army Sergeant-major Florin Badiceanu, aged 31, was killed by the blast of a roadside bomb on 23rd February 2010.

He was among a convoy of armoured cars on patrol along the main Kandahar-Kabul highway. About 4km from Lagman Base, the car he was in drove over the improvised explosive device.

Sgt-maj. Badiceanu, who served with the 33rd Mountain Battalion, leaves a wife and child.

French Army soldier 1st Class Enguerrand Libaert

French Army soldier 1st Class Enguerrand Libaert, aged 20, was killed in action on 9th February 2010 when he was hit by enemy small-arms fire during a combat operation in Kapisa.

He joined the Army in October 2008 and served with the 13th Alpine Battalion. He deployed to Afghanistan with his unit in December 2009 and in February departed on a mission to support a logistics convoy of the Afghan Army in the Alasay valley. It was during this mission that the unit engaged with enemy forces, and he was declared "killed in action".

Two Swedish army officers killed in shootout

Two Swedish officers, Captain Johan Palmlöv and Lieutenant Gunnar Andersson, both with the Swedish Royal Life Guards, and their Afghan interpreter, Mohammad Shahab Ayouby, were part of the patrol which came under fire near a police station, 40 kilometres west of Mazar-e Sharif, near the village of Gurgi Tappeh. All three were killed in the attack.

It is thought they were attacked and killed by an Afghan police officer.

Spanish soldier killed in massive explosion

John Felipe Romero Meneses

A Spanish soldier was killed in Afghanistan 1st February when a bomb exploded under the armoured personnel carrier he was travelling in.

21 year old John Felipe Romero Meneses was travelling as part of an 11-vehicle convoy in Sang Atesh when a “very large explosive device” went off underneath his Pegaso BMR, destroying the vehicle completely. The explosion wounded six others, two of whom are reported to be serious.

Immediately after the explosion, soldiers were forced to defend themselves against an ambush by Taliban forces. In the subsequent firefight, Spanish soldiers killed three Talibans and seized a “large quantity of arms and ammunition.”

Spain’s Ministry of Defence thinks the bomb was specially modified to augment its destructive power and was triggered by the weight of the vehicle passing over it.

Sr Romero Meneses was Columbian and had been in Afghanistan for two months.
