US Army Special Forces NCO dies in hospital in Germany

31-year-old US Army Special Forces Sgt. 1st Class James F. Grissom died on 21st March 2013 at the US Military Hospital, in Landstuhl, Germany.

Sfc. Grissom, from Hayward, California, had been transferred to the hospital after being wounded by small-arms fire during an operation in Paktika province on 18th March. This was his fifth deployment to Afghanistan.

He joined the US Army in June 2003 after attending the Art Institute of Of San Francisco, from where he earned a degree. At the time of his death, he was serving with the 4th Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), based in Washington.

Sfc. Grissom, who leaves his wife, parents and sister, has been posthumously awarded the Bronze Star.

US Army Sergeant William Wilson III killed in Paktika

27-year-old US Army Sergeant William R. Wilson III, from Getzville, New York, was killed in Paktika province on 26th March 2012 by an Afghan policeman who shot Sgt. Wilson at a checkpoint.

Sgt. Wilson served with the Germany-based 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 172nd Infantry Brigade. He joined the Army in 2005.

According to his facebook page, Sgt. Wilson attended Williamsville North High School and had recently been home on leave from Afghanistan. He leaves his parents, William and Kim and brothers, Wesley and Jeremy along with many friends and relatives.

US Army 2nd Lieutenant Jered Ewy

US Army officer 2nd Lieutenant Jered W. Ewy was one of two Oklahoma National Guardsmen killed in action on 29th July 2011 when a bomb detonated as they were on patrol in Paktia, Afghanistan.

2nd Lt. Ewy, age 33, was serving with the 1st Battalion, 279th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

Also killed in the same incident was Spc. Augustus Vicari

US Army Pfc. Anthony Nunn

US Army Private First Class Anthony M. Nunn, aged 19, from Burnet, Texas, was killed on Monday 30th May in Paktika province, Afghanistan, from a bomb blast.

Pfc. Nunn served with 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.

Pfc. Nunn joined the Army in June 2010. His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.

He leaves his parents, Ted A. Nunn and Christina Bennefield, brother Matthew and sister Savanna.

Chief Warrant Officer Christopher Thibodeau

Chief Warrant Officer Christopher R. Thibodeau, aged 28, from Chesterland, Ohio, died on 26th May 2011 in Paktika province, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained when his helicopter crashed during combat operations. 

He served with the 1st Battalion, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Hood, Texas.

CWO Thibodeau deployed to Afghanistan in July 2010, a few weeks after marrying his wife, LeeSandra. Among his many interests was brewing his own beer.

US Army Sgt. John Castro

US Army Sgt. John P. Castro, aged 25, from Andrews, Texas died on 22nd April 2011 in Paktika province, Afghanistan from wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by enemy insurgent small arms fire. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Sgt. Castro joined the military in October 2004 and arrived at Fort Campbell in January 2006.

He is survived by his wife, daughter, step-son, and parents.

U.S Army Pfc. Arturo E. Rodriguez

Pfc. Arturo Rodriguez
U.S Army Pfc. Arturo E. Rodriguez, aged 19, from Bellflower, California, was killed in action on 12th March 2011 in the Giyan district of Paktika province, Afghanistan. He died from wounds received when Taliban insurgents attacked his foot patrol with small arms fire.  

Pfc. Rodriguez joined the Army in February 2010. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal, Parachutist Badge and Combat Infantryman Badge.

Rodriguez is survived by his father, Arturo Rodriguez Segura, and mother, Rosa Jimenez Davila, both from Mexico, and his aunt, Maria Lopez of Bellflower, California.

Polish Army Corporal, Szymon Slowik

Polish Army Corporal, Szymon Slowik, was one of two Polish soldiers killed on 26th February 2008, when a roadside bomb (IED) was detonated and exploded near their Humvee patrol vehicle in the Sharan district of Paktika, Afghanistan.

Corporal Slowik, aged 33, served with the Polish 16th Air Assault Battalion.

Polish Army Private 1st Class, Hubert Kowalewski, was one of two Polish soldiers killed on 26th February 2008, when a roadside bomb (IED) was detonated and exploded near their Humvee patrol vehicle in the Sharan district of Paktika, Afghanistan.

Pfc. Kowalewski, aged 26, served with the Polish 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade.
