Italian Alpine soldier, Corporal Matteo Miotto

Italian Corporal Matteo Miotto, aged 24, was killed on 31st December 2010.

The soldier, with the Italian Army 7th Alpine Regiment of Belluno, was shot by a sniper and died from the wound later the same day.

The incident happened in Gulistan.

British soldier Charles Wood killed by IED

WO2 Charles Wood
Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) Charles Henry Wood from 23 Pioneer Regiment RLC (Royal Logistic Corps), serving with the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Task Force, was killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday 28 December 2010.

WO2 Charles 'Charlie' Wood deployed on Operation HERRICK 13 on 6th November 2010 as an Advanced Search Advisor. Trained to coordinate all aspects of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detection, he was assigned to lead the clearance of a route through the Khushdal Kalay area of the Helmand River Valley to increase the freedom of movement and safety of the local population. 

In the early afternoon of 28 December 2010, with the task nearing completion, Warrant Officer Class 2 Wood was caught in the blast from an IED and killed.

British Para, Corporal Steven Dunn

Cpl. Steven Dunn
Corporal Steven Thomas Dunn from 216 (Parachute) Signal Squadron, attached to 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment Battle Group, was killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday 21 December 2010.

Corporal Dunn deployed to Afghanistan on 19 September 2010 as part of 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment (2 PARA) Battle Group. He was based at Patrol Base 2 in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province.

On 21 December 2010 he was working with 2 PARA Patrols Platoon on a deliberate operation to interdict insurgents in the Bowri desert. He was travelling in a Jackal vehicle which hit an improvised explosive device at 1722 hours local time.

French Commando, Jonathan Lefort

French Commando, Jonathan Lefort , age 28, was killed on December 17, 2010, in Bedraou Valley, Kapisa, Afghanistan.


This was his third tour in Afghanistan.  Jonathan Lefort was born in 1982 in Pompey (Meurthe-et-Moselle), France. 

For his merits in combat, he received the Cross of Military Valour with Bronze Star and the Cross of the fighter. He became a paratrooper instructor. He was also awarded the Medal of National Defence, the Medal with Overseas clasp Republic of Ivory Coast, Medal of Recognition of the nation and the French Commemorative Medal with Clasp Afghanistan.

French Foreign Legionaire, Sergeant Benoit Dupin

French Sergeant Benoit Dupin, age 34, was killed on December 17, 2010, during a clash in Afghanistan.

He was an officer in 2nd Foreign Regiment of Engineers (REG). Starting in 1997, he attended the National School of sub-active officers (ENSO) in Saint-Maixent. Appointed sergeant, he was assigned to the 2nd Marine Infantry Regiment (RIMA) after passing the School of Infantry and took part in several overseas operations as group leader. In 2002, he was admitted to the Combined Military Academy (EMIA). He was promoted to captain on 1 August 2008 and took command of the 3rd company of mechanized combat in June 2010, before leaving for Afghanistan last month.

Captain Benoit Dupin was posted to many overseas operations during his career (Bosnia, Kosovo, Djibouti, Chad). 

He was married with a young child.

British Para, Private John Howard

Pvt. John Howard
Private John Howard, from 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday 5 December 2010.

Private Howard was serving with 16 Air Assault Brigade's Reconnaissance Force on a patrol ten kilometres south west of the provincial capital of Helmand province, Lashkar Gah, when he was fatally wounded during an action conducted against insurgents operating in that area.
