British woman, Jeni Ayris, among victims of Kabul suicide bombing

British woman Jeni Ayris, from Edinburgh, was one of twelve aviation workers killed in Kabul on Tuesday 18th September 2012 when a female insurgent rammed a car laden with explosives into their minibus as they drove to Kabul airport.

Ms Ayris, who was born in South Africa but held British nationality, had been working in Afghanistan for just over a year as a customer relations manager for aviation firm Air Charter Solutions/BalmOral, organising private flights for charities and NGOs into and out of the country.

Eight South African colleagues of Ms Ayris also died in the attack.

Two British contractors killed in Kabul suicide bombing

Two British electrical engineers were among those killed on 29th October 2011 in Kabul when a suicide car bomber rammed the armored bus they were travelling in.

The men, aged 34 and 52, were locally named as David Quinn and Stephen Brown. They were working for Texas-based Fluor Corporation which holds various NATO engineering and construction contracts.

British Commando Sergeant Barry Weston

British Royal Marine Sergeant Barry Weston, serving with 42 Commando, was killed in action on Tuesday 30th August 2011 in Helmand province. He died from the blast of an insurgent bomb while leading a foot patrol near the village of Sukmanda in southern Nahr-e Saraj district.

40-year-old Sgt. Weston, known as 'Baz', joined the Royal Marines in September 1991. After completing six months of arduous training, he joined 42 Commando.

He served in many combat operations including Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Sierra Leone and Iraq. He distinguished himself as a Reconnaissance Operator, Platoon Weapons Instructor and Recruit Troop Sergeant, amongst many other talents.

Sgt. Weston leaves behind his wife Joanne and their three daughters Jasmine, Poppy and Rose.

British Marine Commando James Wright

Royal Marine James Robert Wright was killed in action in Afghanistan on 5th August 2011 after a grenade was thrown into his patrol's checkpoint. 22-year-old Marine Wright, from Weymouth, Dorset, died later from his injuries.

Before the incident, the Marine from 42 Commando had been on foot patrol in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province when they came under fire from insurgents. With the help of mortars and close air support, the group broke contact with the insurgents and returned to their checkpoint. They then came under further attack, which is when Marine Wright fell.

His family has said how proud they were of him and how he "touched the lives of everyone who knew him". Marine Wright's partner Shelley is expecting their baby.

Major Aaron Fisher, Officer Commanding, Juliet Company, 42 Commando Royal Marines, said of Marine Wright that his "courage, heart and gentle manner will be long remembered".

Tributes from his family and comrades say it all: "he was a hero who died for his country."

Marine Commando Lance Corporal Martin Gill

British Marine, Lance Corporal Martin Joseph Gill from 42 Commando Royal Marines died in Helmand province, Afghanistan on Sunday 5th June 2011.

L-Cpl Gill was on patrol in the Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand. His unit was attacked by enemy forces with small-arms fire from a compound. L-Cpl Gill was hit and despite receiving immediate first aid, died of gunshot wounds.

L-Cpl Gill joined the Royal Marines in April 2008 and was appointed to the Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines. Within a year, he was promoted to Lance Corporal and took responsibility for a four-man team, guarding the UK's nuclear deterrent. He moved to 42 Commando Royal Marines in September 2010.

He leaves behind his brother John, sister Rebecca, and girlfriend Lauren, who said:

"Martin Joseph Gill was proud to be a Royal Marine. He was always up for a challenge and unfortunately died doing what he had always wanted to do. He was the life and soul of every party, beloved and cherished by everyone. Martin will be deeply loved and missed forever."

British Commando killed in action - 5 June 2011

A British Commando from 42 Commando Royal Marines was killed in Afghanistan today, Sunday 5th June 2011.

The Marine was fatally wounded by small arms fire while on a joint patrol in the Nahr-e-Sarah (South) District of Helmand Province.

Commando officer, Lt. Oliver Augustin

British Commando officer, Lieutenant Oliver Richard Augustin, serving with 42 Commando Royal Marines, was killed on 27th May 2011 when an improvised explosive device (homemade bomb) was detonated while he was on patrol.

The incident occurred in the Loy Mandeh area of Nad-e-Ali, Helmand province.

Known as Ollie to his friends, and 'Boss' to his men, Lt. Augustin began officer training in September 2009 and passed fit for duty in December 2010.

His first appointment was in Command of Fire Support Group, Juliet Company, 42 Commando Royal Marines. He leaves behind his father Sean, his mother Jane and his sister Sarah.

Decorated War Veteran, Marine Samuel Alexander MC

Decorated war veteran, Marine Samuel Giles William Alexander MC, serving with the British 42 Commando Royal Marines, was killed in action in Afghanistan on 27th May 2011.

Marine Alexander was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry during a previous tour in Afghanistan in 2009. He charged a group of insurgents to draw their fire away from his injured colleague. Having used all the ammunition in his machine gun, he continued assaulting the enemy with just a 9mm pistol until that was empty. The enemy retreated.

Marine Alexander MC was killed by a bomb blast while on patrol in Loy Mandeh, an area of Nad-e-Ali, Helmand province.

British Commando killed in Helmand

A British Royal Marine from 42 Commando Royal Marines was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday 15th May 2011.

The marine was killed by an Improvised Explosive Device while involved in an operation to search a compound in the Loy Mandeh Wadi area of the Nad-e Ali (North) District of Helmand Province.

British Army Captain Lisa Head

British Army Captain Lisa Jade Head from 321 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Squadron, 11 EOD Regiment RLC, died on 19 April 2011, in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Birmingham, of wounds received in Afghanistan.

Captain Head deployed to Afghanistan on 27 March 2011 as an Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEED) (Neutralise) Operator with the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) Task Force. She was based in Patrol Base 4 in the Nahr-e-Saraj District of Helmand province, Afghanistan.

On 18 April 2011, Captain Head deployed with her team to dispose of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) found by B Company, 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment (2 PARA), in an alleyway frequently used by Afghans and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops alike. After rendering safe the initially identified IED, Captain Head was severely injured while dealing with a second IED.

Immediate first aid was provided and a helicopter Medical Emergency Response Team recovered the casualty to the military hospital in Camp Bastion. 

Surgeons stabilised Captain Head sufficiently for a Critical Care Air Support Team to conduct a medical evacuation from Camp Bastion to the Queen Elizabeth NHS Hospital in Birmingham, where she succumbed to her injuries.

British Army Private Daniel Steven Prior

Private Daniel Steven Prior, of 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, was wounded by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan on 17th March 2011 and died of his wounds in the UK the following day.

Private Prior deployed to Afghanistan with D Company, 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment on 13 October 2010 where he was based at Patrol Base 1 in the Nahr-e-Saraj District of Helmand Province. 

On 17th March 2011, he was tasked to provide fire support for his fellow paratroopers and the Afghan National Army during a reassurance patrol in a small village in Nahr-e-Saraj.

At 1242 hours Private Prior was wounded by an improvised explosive device and, despite medical care in Afghanistan and in the UK, he died of his wounds on 18th March 2011 in the Royal College of Defence Medicine Queen Elizabeth NHS Hospital, Birmingham. 

Private Prior had flown back from Afghanistan four weeks ago just in time to be present for the birth of his son, Logan and spent two weeks with his wife and baby before his return to active duty.

British soldier, Lance Corporal Stephen McKee

Lance Corporal Stephen McKee, of the Royal Irish Regiment, was killed on 9th March 2011, during an operation to disrupt insurgent activity in the northern Dashte area of Nad-e Ali district. His vehicle struck an improvised explosive device. 

Lance Corporal McKee, aged 27, came from Banbridge in County Down, Northern Ireland. In 2003 he joined 3rd Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment as a part-time soldier. When the Home Service were disbanded he decided to transfer to 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment and he joined them at Tern Hill, Shropshire, in April 2007.

He was posted to B Company, where he served with distinction for 3 years before moving to the Machine Gun Platoon in D Company in 2010. He first deployed on Op HERRICK 8 in March 2008 and was quickly recognised as a fine soldier, trustworthy and courageous.

He leaves behind his wife Carley, his two parents, three brothers and two sisters.

British Army L-Corporal Liam Richard Tasker

Lance Corporal Liam Richard Tasker, from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, was killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday 1st March 2011.

L-Cpl. Tasker deployed to Afghanistan on 8 September 2010 as part of 1st Military Working Dog Regiment. Having trained as an Arms and Explosives Search dog handler, he was attached to 1st Battalion Irish Guards on 19 February 2011. 

On 1 March 2011, L-Cpl Tasker was taking part in a patrol with his dog, Theo, when they were engaged by small arms fire, during which LCpl Tasker was struck and died from the injuries he sustained. 

Sadly on return to Camp Bastion, Theo suffered a seizure and died.

Funeral for a hero, L-Cpl Kyle Marshall (2 PARA)

The funeral of fallen British para, L-Cpl Kyle Marshall (2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment) will be held early this afternoon (2nd March) at Colchester, Essex.

L-Cpl Marshall was killed by the blast of a roadside bomb in Helmand on 14th February. He will be buried with full military honours.

Speaking after L/Cpl Marshall's death, Lt Col Andrew Harrison, commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, said: "He died as he lived, at the front, guiding his men, surrounded by friends and at the very tip of the battalion spear."

He said that, shortly before his death, L/Cpl Marshall had led his team in the discovery of a huge bomb-making factory, where 35 devices were found.

"This discovery will undoubtedly save numerous colleagues and locals falling prey to the most insidious of insurgent threats," he said.

Private Robert Wood, Royal Logistics Corp

A British soldier who died Monday 14th February has been named as Private Robert Wood, 28, of the Royal Logisitics Corp.

He was killed after a fire broke out at Camp Bastion. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Pte Wood, 28, known as "Woody", recently became a father to a boy, Noah, and was looking forward to returning to his family after his tour of duty.

His parents and partner, Rebecca, said: "Rob was an adored and adoring son, partner, and father to his baby son. We are so immensely proud of him and he will live in our hearts forever."

Kyle Marshall of 2 PARA killed in Afghanistan

Tributes have been paid to an "irreplaceable" soldier killed in an explosion in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal Kyle Cleet Marshall, of 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, died in the blast in the Nahr-e Saraj district on Monday 14th February 2011.

In a statement released today, L-Cpl Marshall's family said: "Kyle was a very lively, outgoing, loving and much-loved son.

"He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. He was due to be married in July to his fiancee, Hayley.

"We take comfort in the fact that he is now with his granddad who died some years ago."

His commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Harrison described him as "irreplaceable".
