Pfc. Michael Mahr

U.S Army Pfc. Michael C. Mahr, aged 26, from Homosassa, Florida, was killed on 22nd March 2011 in Logar province, Afghanistan. His patrol unit was hit by the blast of a roadside bomb and small arms fire by insurgents.

Pfc. Mahr served with the 54th Engineer Battalion, 18th Engineer Brigade, based in Bamberg, Germany.

In the same incident, his colleague Staff Sergeant Joshua Gire also died.

A U.S soldier from Ross County, Columbus, Ohio was killed in combat on 22nd March 2011 in Logar province, Afghanistan. His patrol unit was hit by the blast of a roadside bomb and small arms fire by insurgents.

Family members said that Army officials have informed them of the death of Staff Sergeant Joshua S. Gire, aged 28, during his second tour of duty in Afghanistan.

He joined the Army in 2001. He was third-generation Army, following the service of his father and grandfather, and had recently been promoted to Staff Sergeant.

Staff Sgt. Gire was based in Bamberg, Germany and served with 54th Engineer Battalion, 18th Engineer Brigade. He had previously served in Kosovo and Iraq.

He is survived by his wife and two children, who live in Germany.

His colleague, Pfc. Michael C. Mahr, died in the same incident.

3 German soldiers killed, Feb 18th, have been named

The three German soldiers who were ambushed on 18th February while performing maintenance on a vehicle have been named.

They are:

Master Sergeant, Georg Missulia

Specialist, Konstantin Menz

L-Corporal, Georg Kurat

All three served with 112. Panzergrenadierbattalion/12. Panzerbrigade (112th Armored Grenadier Battalion of 12th Armored Brigade).

French soldier, Clement Chamarier

The French soldier killed in an insurgent rocket attack, 19th February 2011, has been named by the French Defence Ministry as Clement Chamarier, a 19yo soldier serving with the 7th Battalion of Chasseurs Alpine. He was a tank gunner.

He was travelling in a French army convoy between Tagab and Nijrab when insurgents opened fire on them. A rocket hit the vehicle he was in, but it was able to continue driving to a safe location. Medics at the scene were unable to save the young Alpine soldier.

It was his first overseas operation.

The incident occured at the "Observation Point North" base, in the Puli Khumri district.

U.S Army Pfc. Amy Sinkler

U.S Army Private First Class, Amy Sinkler, aged 23, from Chadbourn, North Carolina, died on 20th January 2011, following an ambush by Taliban insurgents on her patrol unit.

Assigned to the 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, Pfc Sinkler was a gunner for the mission. She was in the exposed turret of an armoured vehicle when an enemy rocket propelled grenade struck the vehicle.

She had been in the army since August 2009 and had deployed to Afghanistan in July 2010 for a one year tour of duty.

Corporal Francesco Vannozzi, aged 26, serving with the Italian 7th Alpine Regiment was one of four Italian soldiers killed 9th October 2010 in a battle with Taliban insurgents.

Their patrol was returning to base in Farah province when the vehicles were struck by an improvised explosive device (IED). Following the blast, Taliban then attacked the patrol with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.

Cpl. Vannozzi was born in Pisa, Italy.

The four dead soldiers all served with the 7th Alpini Regiment.

British soldier, Lance-Corporal Stephen Monkhouse

Lance Corporal Stephen Daniel Monkhouse, from the 1st Battalion Scots Guards was killed in Afghanistan on Wednesday 21st July 2010.

L-Cpl. Monkhouse was providing security for the building of Route Trident in Basharan, north of Lashkar Gah. He was the gunner of a Coyote vehicle when insurgents shot and wounded another soldier.

He was providing fire support in order to allow the evacuation of the wounded soldier. Tragically, as the casualty was being extracted, Lance Corporal Monkhouse was killed by small arms fire.

The battle, near Eisakhel village, Chardarah province in Kunduz, lasted over two hours and involved small arms fire, machine-gun and rocket propelled grenade fire.

At the end of it, four German soldiers were dead, four seriously injured and at least twenty Taliban were dead.

The other three Germans were Major Thomas Broer, Major Jorn Radloff and Sergeant Marius Dubnicki.

Estonian soldier killed in ambush

Estonia's Defense Ministry says an Estonian soldier has been killed in southern Afghanistan.
The ministry says Master Sgt. Allain Tikko, 30, was killed 15th June after his unit was ambushed by insurgents in Helmand province. Estonia has now lost four soldiers in Afghanistan.
The death comes just days after Estonia pledged to send an additional 140 troops to Afghanistan, doubling the Baltic country's presence there.

In recent weeks insurgents have gained a stronghold in Helmand province, which is now considered to be the most violent in Afghanistan.

22yo French Para, Anthony Riviere, among 10 dead

A 22 year old is amoung the ten French soldiers killed in an ambush near Kabul on 18 August 2008. Anthony Riviere died from small arms fire 50 kilomteres from the Afghan capital.

“His mother, his sister and I were worried since Anthony had announced his departure for Afghanistan," remembers his father, Alexis. “But we did not express our concern when we talked about it for the last time on the phone." He added.

Anthony had arrived in Afghanistan the month before with the newest rotation of French soldiers. The deployment was due to last four months. he was an accomplished sportsman, dabbling in Taekwondo, football, mountain biking and motocross.

French Legionnaire among 10 soldiers killed

Rodolphe Penon, a combat medic has been praised for his heroism and dedication during the Taliban ambush that killed 10 French soldiers. He continued to provide aid and comfort to wounded soldiers after sustaining injuries to himself. He had been out into the battle several times to rescue others when he finally fell. 

Penon had arrived in Afghanistan the month before with the newest rotation of French soldiers. He leaves behind two daughters, 16 and 14. The 40 year old had been assigned to the 2nd Régiment Etranger de Parachutistes (2nd Parachute Regiment, French Foreign Legion)
