Civilian contract aircrew fatalities in Afghanistan

The following is an estimate of civilian contract air crew fatalities in Afghanistan since 2004.

12 October 2010: a L-100 Hercules aircraft contracted from TransAfrik crashed in a mountain crevice near Kabul on a flight from Bagram killing 6 Filipino, 1 Indian and 1 Kenyan crew. Click here for details.

23 November 2009: A Mi-8 helicopter under contract from Air Freight Aviation (UAE) to NATO forces crashed in eastern Logar province.Three Ukrainian crew members were killed in the crash. 

19 July 2009: A Mi-8 helicopter under contract from Vertikal-T (Russia) to NATO forces crashed at Kandahar air base, killing 16 passengers and crew on board.

14 July 2009: A Mi-26 helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan, killing the six Ukrainian crew members. The aircraft belonged to Pectox-Air (Moldova).

3 December 2006: A Mi-26 helicopter under contract from Vertikal-T (Russia) to US security firm  Dyncorp, crashed in Afghanistan, killing eight Russian crew.

27 July 2006: A chartered Mi-8 helicopter with 16 passengers and crew crashed en route from Khost to Kabul, killing all on board including two Dutch ISAF soldiers.

24 April 2006: An An-26 leased by the US State Department and carrying US DEA agents crashed on landing at Bost airport in Lashkar Gah, killing the two Ukrainian pilots.

11 November 2005: A Georgian registered IL-76 operated by Pakistan's Royal Airlines carrying food for coalition troops crashed near Khak-e-Shahidan village, about 30 kilometres northwest of Kabul, killing all 8 crew members (5 Russians, 2 Ukrainians and 1 Pakistani).

27 November 2004: A US Registered CASA 212 contracted by the US Department of Defense to supply American forces deployed in remote areas of Afghanistan crashed into a mountain between Bagram and Farah. Six crew members were killed.

22 February 2004: a AB-212 helicopter crashed after coming under fire 65 kilometres south-west of Kandahar city. Pilot Mark Burdorf was killed.

British PMC, Mark Fitzpatrick

British private military contractor, Mark Fitzpatrick, aged 34, was killed on 20th November 2010 by an explosion while he was disposing of ammunition in Parwan province.

He had been working for DynCorp International, an American company, clearing mines and other explosive devices left over from previous wars.

British Guardsman, Christopher Davies, killed in gun battle

Guardsman Christopher Davies, from the 1st Battalion Irish Guards, serving with Combined Force Nahr-e Saraj (North), was killed in Afghanistan on Wednesday 17 November 2010.

Guardsman Davies was killed while taking part in a security patrol in Nahr-e Saraj (North), Helmand province. As he was conducting a partnered operation with the Afghan National Army to the east of Patrol Base Hazrat, Guardsman Davies was hit by small arms fire.

Guardsman Davies, aged 22, was born and raised in St Helens, Merseyside. On completion of recruit training, he joined the 1st Battalion Irish Guards in Aldershot in January 2009.

Dutch surgeon dies in Afghanistan


On 16th November 2010, Doctor AHM (Fons) Dur died of a suspected heart attack. Dur, a surgeon, was in Afghanistan as part of a surgical team that worked in the Role 2 hospital in Tarin Kowt in Uruzgan.  
Since 1994, he had worked at the Red Cross Hospital (RKZ) in the Kennemerland region of Holland.

Danish soldier, Jørgen Randrup killed by bomb

Danish soldier, Jørgen Randrup, age 27, of the Royal Guard, was killed by a roadside bomb in the area east of Gereshk in Afghanistan, on November 14, 2010.

Jorgen Randrup
Jørgen Randrup joined the Danish Army in 2003 and had previously been deployed to Kosovo in 2005 and Afghanistan in 2007.

He is survived by his mother, father, sister and girlfriend.

British ranger, Aaron McCormick killed by IED

Aaron McCormick
Ranger Aaron McCormick, from 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, serving as part of Combined Force Nad 'Ali (South), was killed in Helmand, southern Afghanistan, on Sunday 14 November 2010.

Ranger McCormick had been helping to clear an area of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during a security patrol in Nad 'Ali when he was killed in an explosion.

British airman, Scott Hughes

Scott Hughes
Senior Aircraftman Scott 'Scotty' Hughes, serving with Number 1 Squadron Royal Air Force Regiment, died in Cyprus on Sunday 7 November 2010 following injuries sustained in an accident.

Senior Aircraftman (SAC) Hughes was returning from operations in Afghanistan and died from injuries suffered in a boating accident that took place on Friday 5 November as his unit was undertaking decompression activities. He was due to return home to the UK the following day. 

While swimming in the sea he was struck by a power boat operated by the Military Training Wing, British Forces Cyprus. An investigation into the accident is taking place.

British sapper, William Blanchard killed by gunfire

Sapper William Blanchard from 101 (City of London) Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), serving with the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Task Force, was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday 30 October 2010.

Sapper Blanchard was killed as a result of a gunshot wound suffered whilst he was dealing with a suspect explosive device in the Nahr-e Saraj (North) area of Helmand province.

Sapper Blanchard deployed to Afghanistan on 17 September 2010 as part of the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Task Force. Trained to assist in the preparation and operation of explosive ordnance disposal equipment and the recognition and management of conventional munitions, he was part of an improvised explosive device destroy team operating in Helmand province.

On 30 October 2010 his team was in the process of destroying a device when they were engaged by small arms fire. During the engagement Sapper Blanchard was struck by a bullet and died from the injuries he sustained.

Note: The Spanish Defence Ministry reports that from the start of operations in Afghanistan, 98 Spanish soldiers have been killed. Of the 98 deaths, 79 were in aircraft accidents (Yak-42 and Cougar), 15 insurgent attacks (13 of them with IED's), 2 vehicle accidents and the others from natural causes.
