Female Army Sergeant Orsolya Roth

Hungarian Army Sergeant Orsolya Róth, was killed on 17th May 2011 when the armoured vehicle she was in overturned while on patrol in Baghlan province, Afghanistan.

Sgt. Róth was evacuated to a nearby military hospital but died from her injuries.

The convoy of five vehicles was conducting a logistic transport mission and was on its way from Mazar-e Sharif to Pol-e Khomri, when an Afghan vehicle turned onto the main road from a secondary road, the Hungarian Defence Minister said.

The convoy began to overtake the vehicle. While overtaking, the third vehicle in the convoy had an accident when the driver – for reasons still unclear – swerved to the left. The special armoured M-RAP MaxxPro (mine resistant ambush protected) vehicle hit the left shoulder and overturned.

The turret gunner of the vehicle, Lance Sergeant András Dálnoki, died at the scene. Four other soldiers were injured in the incident.

LSgt. Dálnoki, the turret gunner of the vehicle, died at the scene of the crash.

Two Hungarian soldiers killed Baghlan province, Afghanistan

Two Hungarian soldiers who died on Tuesday 17th May 2011 in an accident in Afghanistan have both been declared national heroes.

The soldiers, Andras Dalnoki and Orsolya Roth, lost their lives when a vehicle in a convoy of the Hungarian Provincial Reconstruction Team crashed and overturned.

Four other soldiers were injured in the crash which occurred in Baghlan province, northern Afghanistan, at 10.15am CET, the Hungarian Defence Ministry said.

The driver and five other occupants were travelling in a M-RAP MaxxPro armoured vehicle from Mazari-Sharif to Puli Khumri, when an Afghan vehicle drove onto the road in front of them. Overtaking it, the driver of the third vehicle in the convoy of five suddenly steered to the left. The vehicle then spun at the curb and overturned.

One soldier died at the scene and another on the way to hospital.

The driver is in critical condition. Another one suffered serious injuries while two others were slightly hurt. The injured soldiers will be taken back to Hungary as soon as their condition permits.

Hungarian Warrant Officer, Gyorgy Kolozsvari

Warrant Officer György Kolozsvári who suffered critical injuries in an Afghanistan attack died in hospital on Tuesday morning, 7th September 2010.

WO Kolozsvári was seriously injured on 23rd August when the first convoy of the 8th rotation of HDF PRT was attacked in Afghanistan. The convoy was en route from the Hungarian base in Pol-e-Khumri to Mazar-e-Sharif. The troops were about to return to Hungary. 

Posthumous lieutenant war heroine of the HDF, Judit Ábrahám died on the spot. Two of her comrades sustained serious injuries. Warrant officer György Kolozsvári was injured very seriously, and had to be taken to the Mazar-e Sharif hospital where he received intensive medical treatment. 

He was airlifted to Hungary on 25th August.

Hungarian Army Lieutenant, Judit Abraham

Hungarian Army Lieutenant, Judit Ábrahám, aged 32, was killed in action against armed Afghan insurgents on 23rd August 2010.

She was in an armoured convoy travelling to Mazar-e-Sharif from the Hungarian base in Pol-e-Khumri when they came under heavy fire.

During the battle that followed, Lt. Abraham was killed and two other soldiers injured. One of them, Warrant Officer György Kolozsvári, died later in a Hungarian hospital from his wounds.

Judit was posthumously promoted from Warrant Officer to Lieutenant.

Hungarian Army Major, Krisztian Nemes

Major Nemes

Hungarian explosives expert Major Krisztian Nemes, aged 32, was killed by a bomb on 12th July 2008 in Baghlan province.

Major Nemes had been called to a road leading to Kunduz where a bomb had been found. As he was inspecting the device, it exploded, killing Nemes and injuring an Afghan police officer.

He had been sent to Afghanistan a few weeks previouly to replace Lieutenant Gyula Kovacs, who was killed by an explosive in June 2008. 

Major Nemes was posthumously promoted from Captain and declared a national hero.

Hungarian Sergeant, Gyula Kovacs

Hungarian Army Bomb-disposal expert, Sergeant 1st-class Gyula Kovacs, aged 30, was killed as he was attempting to defuse a roadside bomb and the device exploded.

The incident happened in Baghlan province on 10th June 2008.

Sgt. Kovacs was a member of the Hungarian Provincial Reconstruction Team, Hungarian Army.

He was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Sergeant First Class.
