US Army Lieutenant Tobias Alexander

30-year-old US Army 2nd Lieutenant Tobias C. Alexander, from Lawton, Oklahoma, was one of two soldiers killed in Tarin Kowt on 20th May 2012. They died when a bomb exploded beside them.

2Lt Alexander served with the Oklahoma-based 168th Brigade Support Battalion, 214th Fires Brigade.

The other soldier killed was Captain Jesse Ozbat.

U.S Army Sergeant Eric M. Nettleton

Sgt. Eric M. Nettleton
U.S Army Sergeant Eric M. Nettleton, aged 26 from Wichita, Kansas, was killed on 5th January 2011 in Tarin Kowt. He died from wounds he received when insurgents set off a roadside bomb while he was on patrol.

He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.

After he joined the Army, and on completion of his basic training, Sgt. Nettleton was assigned to the 82nd Airborne. He was then deployed to Afghanistan to guard the country's first elections. When he came home he was assigned at West Point as a member of the Honor Guard and Color Guard. 

He then requested to be stationed at Ft. Riley to be closer to his family. In September 2008, he was deployed to Iraq, returning home in September 2009. From June 2010 until his death, he was with the Stryker Unit in Afghanistan.

Dutch Pfc. Jos ten Brinke

A Dutch soldier serving with NATO-led forces in southern Afghanistan was killed on 7th September 2008 by a roadside bomb, the Dutch Defense Ministry announced.

The 21-year-old soldier, Jos ten Brinke, was killed about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) north of the town of Tarin Kowt, the ministry said in a statement.

Five others soldiers were wounded in the attack, one of them seriously, the ministry said.

Dutch Army Sergeant Robert Donkers

Dutch Army Sergeant 1st Class Robert Donkers, aged 33, was killed on 6th April 2007 in a tragic accident near Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan.

The patrol vehicle he was in left the road and ended up in a river bed trapping Sgt. Donkers.

Amazingly, he was still alive when rescuers pulled him out. Sadly he died later at a military hospital in Afghanistan.
