British Army Colour-Sergeant, Alan Cameron

Sergeant Alan Cameron from 1st Battalion Scots Guards died on 31 March 2011 as a result of wounds he received in Afghanistan on 13 April 2010.

CSgt. Cameron received serious head injuries when he was struck by an Improvised Explosive Device while on foot patrol north of Lashkar Gah on 13 April 2010.

He succumbed to his wounds and died suddenly at home in Livingston, Scotland on 31 March 2011. He was aged 42. 

Colour Sergeant Cameron, or 'Cammy' as he was known, had been making a good recovery from his wounds after undergoing a number of difficult operations. The post mortem found that his death was directly attributable to the injuries he suffered last year.

British Trooper, Andrew Howarth killed in action


Trooper Andrew Martin Howarth of Fondouk Squadron, The Queen's Royal Lancers, was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday 18 September 2010.

Trooper Howarth was killed in action during a vehicle patrol in the Bolan district of Lashkar Gah in Helmand province alongside one of his colleagues.

Trooper Howarth was born in Bournemouth on 28 May 1990. He attended Queen Elizabeth's School in Wimborne, Dorset, before joining the Army in 2007. 

He completed basic training at the Army Training Regiment Bassingbourn before passing out of Royal Armoured Corps Phase 2 training at Bovington. He joined The Queen's Royal Lancers in Catterick, North Yorkshire, in February of 2008, and in doing so became the third generation of his family to serve with the regiment.

Andrew Jones, Royal Engineers, killed in action


Sergeant Andrew James Jones of the Royal Engineers was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday 18 September 2010.

Sergeant Jones was killed in action during a vehicle-mounted ground domination patrol in the Bolan district of Lashkar Gah alongside Trooper Andrew Martin Howarth.

He was serving as part of Fondouk Squadron, The Queen's Royal Lancers, and was providing security to the people of Helmand province by denying insurgents' freedom of movement.

Lance Sergeant Dale Alanzo McCallum

Lance Sergeant Dale Alanzo McCallum of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday 1st August 2010.

Lance Sergeant McCallum, who was serving as part of Combined Force Lashkar Gah, was killed by small arms fire whilst commanding his men in an operation to provide security for local Afghan nationals in the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand province.

At approximately 1320 hours, the sangar at his checkpoint came under effective enemy fire from insurgent forces. Lance Sergeant McCallum quickly moved to the sangar and as he was moving into a position to engage the insurgents he received a fatal gunshot wound.

British soldier, Lance-Corporal Stephen Monkhouse

Lance Corporal Stephen Daniel Monkhouse, from the 1st Battalion Scots Guards was killed in Afghanistan on Wednesday 21st July 2010.

L-Cpl. Monkhouse was providing security for the building of Route Trident in Basharan, north of Lashkar Gah. He was the gunner of a Coyote vehicle when insurgents shot and wounded another soldier.

He was providing fire support in order to allow the evacuation of the wounded soldier. Tragically, as the casualty was being extracted, Lance Corporal Monkhouse was killed by small arms fire.

British Dragoon Guard, Corporal Matthew Stenton

Corporal Matthew James Stenton from The Royal Dragoon Guards was killed in Afghanistan on Wednesday 21st July 2010.

He was part of combined force of soldiers from the Royal Dragoon Guards and the 1st Battalion Scots Guards who were providing security for the building of Route Trident in Basharan, north of Lashkar Gah.

Cpl. Stenton, was commanding a Viking armoured vehicle that was part of a cordon to facilitate the exploitation of a number of IEDs when insurgents shot and wounded another soldier.

He manoeuvred his vehicle in order to lay down fire and extract the casualty. As he was doing this, he was shot and killed by small arms fire.

BBC Journalist, Abdul Rohani

Abdul Samad Rohani
An Afghan journalist working for the BBC in the country's southern Helmand province has been found shot dead.

Abdul Samad Rohani had been abducted and his body was found on 7th June 2008 in Lashkar Gah. 

Rohani worked with the BBC Kabul bureau and was the Pashto service reporter for the BBC World Service in Helmand.
