German Army Oberstabsgefreiter Alexej Kobelew

German Army Oberstabsgefreiter Alexej Kobelew, age 23, from Bielefeld, northwest Germany, was killed in action in Baghlan province, Afghanistan on 2nd June 2011.

He was in a German Marder tank on a patrol in the province when a hidden road mine detonated beneath the vehicle. He was serving with the 212 Panzer Grenadier battalion.

Born in Belovo, Russia, he went to school in Germany and joined the German Army in 2007. He deployed to Afghanistan in March 2011.

Six other German soldiers were wounded in the same attack.

German Army Captain Markus Matthes

German Army Captain Markus Matthes, age 33, was killed by a bomb blast in Kunduz on 25th May 2011.

The officer was part of an armoured patrol in the region. Two bombs were detonated beside the convoy damaging three vehicles.

Capt. Matthes served with the Special Operations Division.

Two German soldiers were injured in the same attack.

German Army Major Thomas Tholi

German Army Major, Thomas Tholi, aged 43, was killed by a suicide bomber in Kunduz province, Afghanistan on 28th May 2011.

He served with the German Command Support Battalion.

Major Tholi was at a meeting in Takhar that included the governor of Kunduz province. As the meeting ended, an Afghan policeman approached the group and detonated a bomb attached to his vest.

German tank hit by bomb - 1 dead, 5 wounded

A German soldier died and five were wounded when their tank was hit by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, German news agency DAPD reported on Thursday 2nd June 2011.

A spokesman for the German Army Operations Command in Potsdam said that the attack on the German soldiers took place Thursday morning in the province of Baghlan, around 22 miles (35 kilometers) south of the city of Kunduz.

Update: The Bundeswehr has announced the fallen soldier is a 23 year old Corporal serving with the 21st Panzer Brigade from Augustdorf.


German Army Hauptfeldwebel Tobias Langenstein

German Army Hauptfeldwebel Tobias Langenstein, aged 31, was killed by a suicide bomber in Kunduz province, Afghanistan on 28th May 2011.

He served with 152 Military Police Battalion, based in Hanover, Germany.

Hauptfeldwebel Langenstein was at a meeting in Takhar that included the governor of Kunduz province. As the meeting ended, an Afghan policeman approached the group and detonated a bomb attached to his vest.

Oberfeldwebel Florian Pauli

26yo German Army Sergeant Florian Pauli was killed in action on 7th October 2010 when an Afghan insurgent dressed as a civilian approached his unit and detonated a suicide bomb.

The incident happened in Baghlan province, Afghanistan.

Sgt. Pauli, serving with 313 Parachute Regiment, was a trained paramedic in civilian life. He joined the Army in 2005.

German Army Sergeant, Josef Kronawitter

German Army Master Sergeant, Josef Kronawitter, aged 24, was one of four German soldiers serving with ISAF, killed on 15th April 2010 in a fierce gun battle with Taliban insurgents.

The battle, near Eisakhel village, Chardarah province in Kunduz, lasted over two hours and involved small arms fire, machine-gun and rocket propelled grenade fire.

At the end of it, four German soldiers were dead, four seriously injured and at least twenty Taliban were dead.

The incident happened in Chahar Darreh district of Kunduz, Afghanistan.

Cpl. Hartert, serving with 373 Parachute Regiment, had been in the German military since 2006.

He leaves behind his girlfriend and family.

Cpl. Augustyniak, serving with 373 Parachute Regiment, had been in the German military since 2008.

He leaves a wife and three year old son Remo.

Hauptfeldwebel Nils Bruns

35yo German Army Master Sergeant Nils Bruns was killed in action on 2nd April 2010 when insurgent forces attacked his unit with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades.

The incident happened in Chahar Darreh district of Kunduz, Afghanistan.

MSgt. Bruns, serving with 373 Parachute Regiment, had been in the German military since 1998 and became a paratrooper in 2006.

He leaves a wife and two year old daughter.

German Army Corporal Patric Sauer

German Army Corporal Patric Sauer, age 24, serving with the German 263 Parachute Regiment, died on 4th October 2009 in Mainz from injuries received from a suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan on 6th August.

Cpl. Sauer had been evacuated to a military field hospital in Afghanistan, then later air evacuated to Germany where he died.

German Army Corporal Oleg Meiling

German Army Corporal Oleg Meiling, age 21, was one of three soldiers killed when their unit was attacked by Taliban forces on 23rd June 2009 in Kunduz, Afghanistan.

Cpl. Meiling, serving with 391 Mechanised Infantry, died from gunshot wounds.

German paratrooper, Corporal Alex Schleiernick

German Army Corporal Alex Schleiernick, age 23, was one of three soldiers killed when their unit was attacked by Taliban forces on 23rd June 2009 in Kunduz, Afghanistan.

Cpl. Schleiernick, serving with 263 Parachute Regiment, died from gunshot wounds.

German Army Corporal Martin Brunn, age 23, was one of three soldiers killed when their unit was attacked by Taliban forces on 23rd June 2009 in Kunduz, Afghanistan.

Cpl. Brunn, serving with a Panzer Grenadier battalion, died from gunshot wounds.

German Army Corporal Sergey Motz, age 21, was killed in Kunduz, Afghanistan on 29th April 2009 when insurgent forces attacked his unit.

Cpl. Motz, serving with 292 Military Police died from a rocket propelled grenade blast.

German Army Corporal Conrad Hoetzel, age 21, was killed on 14th March 2009 in Feyzabad, Afghanistan.

Cpl. Hoetzel, serving with 37 Mechanised Infantry, died in a traffic accident.
