Polish Army Pfc. Mariusz Deptula

28-year-old Polish Army Private 1st Class Mariusz Deptula was killed in action during a patrol in Ghazni province on 23rd October 2011. The vehicle he was in drove over a buried road mine. He was evacuated to a field hospital at the Polish base but died from his injuries.

Pfc. Deptula served with the 15th Giżycko Mechanized Brigade. This was his first deployment to Afghanistan. He leaves his wife and daughter among other relatives and friends.

Another soldier in the vehicle was seriously wounded, but his life was not in danger.

Lance-Corporal Paweł Poświat

Polish Army Lance-Corporal Paweł Poświat was killed in Ghazni province on 28th July 2011 when a road mine detonated beneath his armored patrol vehicle. L-Cpl. Poświat, age 29, was driving the vehicle at the time of the explosion.

Seriously injured, he was evacuated by helicopter to the Polish military base hospital in Ghazni. Sadly, doctors were unable to save his life.

L-Cpl. Poświat, a bachelor, joined the Polish Army in 2003 and served with the 17th Wielkopolska Mechanized Brigade.

Polish Army L-Cpl. Jaroslaw Mackowiak

27 year-old Senior Corporal Jaroslaw Mackowiak was killed and two other soldiers wounded during an insurgent attack on a Polish patrol on Thursday 2nd June 2011, in Ghazni province, southeast Afghanistan.

Polish armed forces spokesman, Major Szczepan Głuszczak, said the attack took place in the morning north-west of Giro base where the Polish Bravo battle group is situated. The soldiers were attacked with small arms fire and anti-tank grenade launchers.

L-Cpl. Mackowiak joined the Polish Army in 2006 and was on his second deployment to Afghanistan. He served with 17th Wielkopolska Mechanized Brigade in Międzyrzecz.

The wounded were transported to a field hospital in Ghazni where their condition is said to be "stable".

Polish soldier, Pawel Staniaszek

Polish Army Private First Class, Pawel Staniaszek, aged 29, died on Wednesday 20th April 2011 at the Military Medical Institute in Warsaw from wounds he received in Afghanistan when a roadside bomb was detonated near his patrol.

Pfc. Staniaszek, serving with the 2nd Mazowiecka Sapper Brigade, was seriously injured during the incident on 9th October 2009. The attack took place in Wardak province, about 40km from Ghazni when the patrol stopped to check their vehicles. The explosion occurred when they returned to the vehicles.

Polish Commando, Warrant Officer Bartosz Spychała

Warrant Officer Bartosz Spychała of the Polish 1st Special Commando Regiment died on Sunday at the military base in Ghazni, south east Afghanistan.

"The circumstances of the death of our colleague are currently subject to clarification by medical staff and military police,” says a statement on the web site of the Polish armed forces.

The 39 year-old officer leaves behind a wife and 15 year-old daughter.

WO Spychała began his military career in 1992 at the military unit in Bialystok and served with the 1st Special Commando Regiment based in Lubliniec since 1994.

A Polish soldier was killed on 23rd January 2011, as a result of a mine blast during a routine patrol in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province. 

The explosion occured as a Rosomak armoured vehicle he was travelling in drove over a mine in the south-eastern region of the Ghazni province during a joint patrol with Polish soldiers and Afghan police forces.

Private First Class Marcin Pastusiak, age 26, was a member of the Military Police’s Special Unit in Minsk Mazowiecki. He had previously served a tour of duty in Lebanon in 2008. He was unmarried.

Polish soldier, Adam Borzyszkowski

28-year-old Senior Private Adam Szada Borzyszkowski died 14th October  during mortar attack on a Polish patrol, in the southern part of Ghazni province. 

He was serving with the 1st Battalion Air Cavalry, based in Leźnica Wielka.

The incident happened as Polish troops from Task Force FOB Warrior were patrolling Highway 1. Snr Pvt Borzyszkowski was airlifted to a Field Hospital in Ghazni, but he died from his injuries.
 

This was his second overseas mission, having served in Iraq in 2007.

Polish soldier, Kazimierz Kasprzak

In the early hours of 27th September 2010, Sergeant Kazimierz Kasprzak died from wounds sustained in the explosion of the roadside bomb. 

The incident happened in the eastern part of Ghazni province. Troops of the Bravo Combat Team were attacked while performing a combat patrol. Sgt. Kasprzak was injured in the attack. 

Despite immediate  medical aid provided, he died from his injuries.

Sgt. Kazimierz Kasprzak served in the 15th Goldap Anti-aircraft Regiment. He was 32, and leaves a wife and two children. 

He becomes the 21st Polish fatality in Afghanistan.

Polish Army soldier, Private Dariusz Tyleda

Polish Army soldier, Private Dariusz Tyleda, was killed on 6th August 2010 from the blast of an imporovised explosive device (IED).

Pvt. Tyleda, aged 31, served with the Goldap Ant-aircraft Battalion. Whilst on patrol with his unit in Ghazni province, a bomb was detonated by insurgents and then the unit came under enemy fire.

Five other soldiers were wounded in the attack.

Pvt. Tyleda leaves a wife and child.

Polish sapper, Corporal Pawel Stypula

On 26th June 2010 at about 19.45 (local time) in the southern part of Ghazni province, Polish sapper, Corporal Paweł Stypuła, was killed while defusing a land mine.

His team had been called by a Polish patrol who had narrowly escaped the blast from another IED.

Corporal Stypula, aged 26, was serving with the 2nd Masovian Sappers Brigade.

On 15th June 2010, Taliban insurgents launched a missile attack on the coalition military Warrior base.

Polish Private 1st Class, Grzegorz Bukowski, aged 29, and serving with the Polish Military Police, was killed by shrapnel from the attack.

Two other soldiers were injured in the incident.

A Polish convoy of Rosomak APC vehicles was ambushed near the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Warrior in Ghazni province 12th June 2010.

Taliban insurgents detonated a roadside bomb which killed Polish gunner, Corporal Milosz Gorka, aged 25. He served with the 25th Air Cavalry Brigade.

Three other soldiers suffered minor injuries in the attack.

Polish soldier, Michał Kołek

On 19th December 2009, Private 2nd Class Michał Kołek serving as part of the Quick Reaction Forces,  died in an insurgent attack on a Polish patrol around 1 pm local time (9.30 CET).

The incident occurred about 3,5 km away from the Four Courners base when the patrol was attacked by Taliban insurgents with machine gun fire and RPG grenade launchers. Immediately, Close Air Support and Quick Reaction Forces were directed to the site. After several minutes, a joint American-Afghani patrol provided support to Polish troops. In the exchange of fire PSC Michał Kołek was hit and died.

Two “Rosomak” vehicles were destroyed and six insurgents were killed in the battle.

Aged 22, Private 2nd Class Michał Kołek was a  bachelor. In Poland, he served with the Polish-Ukrainian Battalion in Przemysl. It was his first mission abroad.

He was buried on 24th December on a Christmas Eve, in his hometown Stalowa Wola.

Corporal Szymon Graczyk was killed along with his colleague, Corporal Radoslaw Szyszkiewicz when their MRAP vehicle hit a road mine (IED) while they were travelling in a convoy along Higway 1 in the Wardak province, Afghanistan, on 9th October 2009. 

Four other soldiers who were wounded in the incident were rushed by helicopter to a base in Ghazni province for medical treatment. 

The funeral ceremony took place on 14th October in his home-town Szczecin.

Both killed soldiers served in 5th Engineering Regiment in Szczecin.

“A soldier does not die, a soldier goes away to stand on an eternal sentry”, said Polish Chief of GS Gen. Franciszek Gągor during th funeral ceremony of Corporal Radosław Szyszkiewicz on 15th October in Iwanowice, Wielkopolska province.

Polish soldier, Piotr Marciniak, killed in gun battle with Taliban

Polish Private 1st Class, Piotr Marciniak, was killed 11th September 2009 in a fierce gun battle between coalition troops and Taliban militants.

He served with the Polish 6th Airborne Cavalry Brigade. His unit had been sent to support a joint US-Afghan force who were fighting the Taliban, in Ghazni province.

Pfc Marciniak, aged 30, was killed by gunfire.

Private 1st Class, Artur Pyc, with the Polish 18th Air Assault Brigade died 9th September 2009 in a military hospital at Lublin, where he had been since May.

Pfc Pyc was seriously injured in eastern Ghazni province a when a roadside bomb exploded under the mine-resistant armored vehicle he was driving.

Sergeant Marcin Poręba was killed by a home-made IED that went off under an armoured troop carrier as a military convoy was travelling  about two kilometres from the Polish base of Giro on 4th September 2009. 

Five other soldiers were wounded during the explosion. They were immediately treated and taken to a Field Hospital.

Sgt. Marcin Poręba was posthumously awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Military Cross, the Star of Afghanistan and the Star of Iraq.

It was his second mission abroad. He served in 5 Engineering Regiment in Szczecin. He leaves a wife and a son.

Sgt. Poręba was buried in his home town of Szczecyn.

Polish officer, Captain Daniel Ambroziński

Capt. Daniel Ambroziński

The body of Captain Daniel Ambroziński, declared missing in action (MIA) during a shootout 10th August 2009, was found the following day after an intensive all-night search by Polish and Afghani forces. 

Captain Ambroziński died of a gunshot wound during the operation code-named “Over the Top” in the Ajiristan district of Ghazni province. A joint Polish and Afghani foot patrol was attacked by a group of Taliban. During an intensive exchange of fire Captain Ambrozinski was killed and four others were injured. 

Aged 32, he served in the Operational Mentor and Liaison Team (OMLT). At home he served in the 1st Air Cavalry Battalion in Leznica Wielka. 

He left a wife and a daughter.
